The arena has a seating capacity of 18,500 as a hockey venue and 20,734 as a concert venue. Rogers Place is the home of the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League (NHL) and the Edmonton Oil Kings of the Western Hockey League (WHL). The Sporting News rated Rogers Place as the fifth best arena in the NHL. The Oilers played their first game on October 12, 2016, against their provincial rivals, the Calgary Flames. Prior to the game, there was a pregame ceremony featuring Oilers legends Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier, where a statue of Gretzky was unveiled outside of the arena.
