Located in Jacksonville, the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve offers a glimpse into over 6,000 years of human history. Split between several parcels of land that are separated by the St. Johns River, this U.S. National Preserve spans over 46,000 acres of salt marshes, coastal dunes, and hardwood hammocks. The Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve is named for the Timucua-speaking tribes that inhabited central and northern Florida and southeastern Georgia when the French arrived on the Atlantic Coast in 1562.

Visiting the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve allows you the opportunity to learn more about the Timucuans and their culture, which remained essentially unchanged for over 1000 years prior to European contact and colonization. You can also take this time to visit Fort Caroline, an attempted colonial settlement memorializing the French presence in Florida. The Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve is also home to the Kingsley Plantation, providing visitors with a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the struggles of enslaved African peoples who were forced to come to Florida to work. The Kingsley Plantation can be found north of the St. Johns River while Fort Caroline, as well as several excellent hiking trails, can be found south of the river.
