The French Quarter was founded in 1718 and is the oldest district within the city of New Orleans. The French Quarter was originally named “Old Square” and is where the city of New Orleans was founded and the remainder of the city has been developed around the French Quarter. The entire French Quarter district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966 and was designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1965. New Orleans attracts over 18 million visitors per year and the majority of those visitors make their way to the French Quarter.

The French Quarter is very well known for its historical charm and popular landmarks. Both Jackson Square and Bourbon Street are located within the neighbourhood of the French Quarter. The district takes up a total area of just about 0.66 square miles and sits just 1 foot above sea level. Though the French Quarter was founded by the French in the 1700’s, it was the Spanish who ultimately took over the city of New Orleans in 1763. This led to the development of the Spanish/European replicated streets.

Remarkably the French Quarter was practically unaffected from Hurricane Katrina, where most of the city saw some severe damage the French Quarter dealt with minor flooding on the odd streets.
